German Snacks — Chips, Pretzels, Meat Sticks & Savory Favorites
German snack culture goes well beyond pretzels. This is where you'll find funny-frisch Chipsfrisch (Germany's best-selling potato chip), Lorenz Crunchips and Erdnusslocken, Chio Tortilla Chips, BiFi salami sticks, and Ferrero's savory offerings. German chips use real paprika spice — not artificial flavoring — and the flavor profiles are unlike anything on US or UK shelves. Every product here is the authentic German version with original seasoning.
German Snack Brands Worth Knowing
funny-frisch
For over 50 years, funny-frisch has been Germany's go-to chip brand. Their Chipsfrisch Ungarisch (Hungarian paprika) is the country's single best-selling chip flavor — a taste that defines German snacking. Made with real Hungarian paprika, these chips have a depth of flavor that American paprika chips can't match. The brand also produces Jumpys (kangaroo-shaped puffed snacks popular with kids) and Goldfischli baked crackers.
Lorenz
Lorenz Snack-World covers the crunchy spectrum: Crunchips (kettle-style potato chips), Saltletts pretzels, Erdnusslocken (peanut-flavored puffed curls — a uniquely German snack with no real international equivalent), and NicNac's double-coated peanuts.
Chio
Chio rounds out the chip aisle with tortilla chips, Chio Chips, and their popular Maxi Mix assortments — party-sized bags with a mix of shapes and flavors.
Meat Snacks
BiFi, the original German mini-salami, has been a gas station and lunchbox staple since 1972. Still made in Ansbach, Germany, BiFi comes in Original, Roll (salami wrapped in bread), and Carazza (pizza-style) varieties.
What Makes German Chips Different
German potato chips are subject to EU food regulations, which means no artificial trans fats, stricter limits on additives, and real spice blends instead of synthesized flavorings. The result is a cleaner-tasting chip with more complex seasoning.
FAQ Section
1. Q: What flavor is funny-frisch Chipsfrisch Ungarisch?
A: It's a smoky-sweet paprika flavor made with genuine Hungarian paprika spice. It's Germany's number one chip flavor and has a deeper, more complex taste than American "BBQ" or "paprika" chips. If you've never tried it, this is the single best introduction to German snacking.
2. Q: What are Erdnusslocken?
A: Erdnusslocken are puffed corn curls flavored with peanut. They're made by Lorenz and are one of Germany's most popular and distinctive snacks — light, crunchy, and peanut-flavored throughout (not just coated). There's no widely available equivalent in US or UK stores.
3. Q: Are BiFi salami sticks made in Germany?
A: Yes. Despite being owned by American company Jack Link's since 2014, BiFi products are still manufactured at the original Schafft Fleischwerke facility in Ansbach, Germany, using German production methods.
4. Q: Do German chips contain fewer artificial ingredients than American chips?
A: Generally, yes. EU food regulations restrict many additives permitted in the US, and German chip brands like funny-frisch and Lorenz use real spice blends rather than artificial flavoring compounds. German chips also cannot contain artificial trans fats.
